We are outside of the US a least twice per year (and used to lived in Asia for the better part of 10 years). Perspective from a boat in Greece while 'wasted on lemon Fanta" (love that line, by the way :-) ) or from a train in Thailand is everything. So glad you wrote this! Appreciate you.
Wonderful! I heartily agree with everything you said. I've lived overseas as a teacher -- and I've been living in Costa Rica now for 5 1/2 years, retired. These expat experiences have changed my perspective -- it's so obvious now that America is NOT better than anywhere else. I wish more Americans could be open to learning from other cultures.
My visits to Greece have been most influential, I think. This will be my 4th visit - there's something about the people and their kindness that lures me back.
Love this as usual! So much wisdom. No culture has it perfect, but ours has yielded enormous wealth and long lifespans alongside sky-high deaths of despair. What did we miss? In addition to appreciating struggle, I wonder about even a subtle shift in what goodness, wealth, achievement looks like-- a culture of abundance instead of scarcity-- a collective win = a personal win instead of the American hustle / zero-sum game.
beautiful essay <3
Loved this, Lindsey.

I can't find words suitable for how much I appreciate this. I especially agree with Connie & Lauren's comments.

Yes, I worry our pride is going to be our downfall.
I'm curious where you've been in Greece?
It sounds like such a beautiful trip❤️

Well said. The collective win has disappeared as a concept.
