Lindsey, you touched on some very good points here. Especially with the differences you observe between cultures. On your question: "which are (like my everlasting fight against gray hairs) cages disguised as harmless rituals?"--I'd agree with you that this always looks harmless, until our kids watch us fight the gray, and look little forward to their future. Thank you for sharing your thoughts here.
Lindsey- "I will gladly marry this plate of food," stood out to me. :) I too will gladly marry that plate. Or any plate presented in that manner. When did the rest of the world stop serving food on leaves!? :)
I'd love to know more about hosting the exchange students, how you 'found' them, and on and on.
I shared your story about the Stanley cups quest with a mom who invited me on a "Moms' Healthy Hour" walk at 7:30am on a Saturday morning. We enjoyed knowing your student visitors returned to Germany well-hydrated and on-trend!
Ha isn't the Stanley thing great?! They also texted me about all the Trader Joe's things they took home and are cooking in Germany.
My kids go to a school that is K-12, and the German students were coming to the high school. So the school administration sent an email to all the parents at the school asking about who might want to host the kids coming. I think a lot of people initially responded, but by the end it was just 10 families who committed. All the other host families had high school kids in their family, but I think having the younger kids made for a really fun dynamic!
And here I thought you had an experience getting back into that country. The actual context was much richer. And lizano on everything. I love it. Costa Rica smells like lavender and passion fruit, sounds like howler monkeys, and tastes like lizano (and imperial)

And you have a pet lizard with painted toenails! How can other families compete with that?!

Wow. Just wow. Please think and write forever.
